Euthanasia and assisted suicide in psychiatric patients: A systematic review of the literature

The number of psychiatric patients requesting Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide (EAS) continues to increase. aims this systematic review were to: 1) describe the available data related having received EAS (pEAS) for each country in which is allowed; 2) and ethically salient points that arise. PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus databases searched identify articles published up September 2020. Among retrieved publications, only studies on pEAS cases (pEAS-C), requests, physician reports/attitude towards reporting some quantitative retained. 24 included studies, thirteen (54%) about Netherlands, four (17%) Belgium, seven (29%) Switzerland. Results different across countries. In pEAS-C mostly women (70–77%) often had at least two disorders (56–97%). Mood mainly represented (55–70%) together with personality (52–54%). History suicide attempts was present 34–52%. Moreover, 37–62% them one comorbid medical condition. Belgium (75%), but majority (71%) a single diagnosis, mood disorder. Switzerland less detailed. As seem be very similar ‘traditional suicides’, procedures should carefully revised establish specific criteria access guidelines evaluation request. A deeper focus unbearable suffering, decision capacity possibilities improvements warranted as well involvement mental health professionals.
